Central Coast Council prepares for September 2024 election and referendum

Avoca Beach played host to the Administrator, Mr Rik Hart at a well-attended meeting on 3rd June, as Central Coast Council is preparing to welcome back councillors following NSW Local Government Elections, to be held on Saturday 14 September.

Rik Hart, Administrator

Mr Hart explained that Council was in considerable financial difficulty when it went into administration. At one stage it did not have the funds to pay the Council’s weekly wage bill. Faced with this unenviable position a controversial decision was made to sack all Central Coast Councillors as well as some key staff members. A public enquiry was held, and the result was, simply put, poor administration by multiple key figures. An all-round stuff up. No malicious intent was identified.

It’s been a bit of a rocky ride getting things back on track while in administration, with increased rates, reduced services and no apparent democratic process. But fortunately, good business management from head honchos like Dick Persson, Rik Hart and the current CEO David Farmer Council, have got Council back on track financially. CEO David Farmer said Council is well prepared for the return of councillors.

“As we move towards a re-elected Council, Council will have run three consecutive surpluses and repaid $100M of its emergency debt. Importantly also, we have a comprehensive councillor induction program to ensure our newly elected representatives are fully informed and supported to carry out their roles effectively.”

The Referendum

On the same day as the election, voters will also participate in a referendum to determine the future number of Central Coast councillors. Voters will be asked to respond ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the referendum question: ‘Do you favour a reduction in the number of Central Coast councillors from fifteen to nine? This will result in three Wards with each Ward electing three councillors.

Rik Hart urged the meeting to consider carefully both sides of this argument so an informed decision could be made for the benefit of the Central Coast. Information about the constitutional referendum and councillor information sessions, can be found by searching for ‘election and referendum’ at www.centralcoast.nsw.gov.au
