Dig Deep for Avoca Local Pat Wheatley and his Family

Many Avocans will know Pat Wheatley, a self-employed tradie and longtime member of the community. A former Avoca Beach Public and Kincumber High student, Pat has been a long time member of the Avoca Beach Rugby Club and Avoca Boardriders, starting out as a junior ball boy and becoming a valued first grade player. Pat’s cheeky grin and easy going personality have endeared him to many.

In July last year Pat, Elissa and their beautiful baby, Macey, were enjoying a family afternoon on their property when Pat had a devastating horse-riding accident, breaking a number of vertebrae in his neck. He was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital for emergency surgery where he spent over a week in ICU, followed by two months in hospital. He is currently in the Royal Ryde Rehabilitation Centre Spinal Unit starting the long and difficult recovery process as a C4 quadriplegic. Pat is looking forward to coming home shortly and tackling the challenge of adapting to home life. His positive outlook, determination and perseverance are an inspiration to all.

Unfortunately, this is not the first medical drama the family has undergone. Only a few years ago Elissa, a promising jockey, also had a horse-riding accident, ending up in an induced coma and spending months in hospitals and rehab. Fortunately, she made a remarkable recovery following which Pat and Elissa got married and brought their greatest gift, Macey, into the world.

The Wheatley family will be facing ongoing medical costs related to Pat’s condition. A Fundraiser Luncheon with all funds going to help the Wheatley family has already sold out, thanks to the amazing support from the Avoca Beach community. However, anyone who wishes to make a donation can do so on the ‘Help support Pat and The Wheatley family’ GoFundMe page. Anyone who would like contribute items to the fundraising auction to be held at the luncheon can contact Mitchell Jacob on mitchjacob2251@gmail.com

We encourage everyone to take this opportunity to be a part of the generous and caring community that is Avoca Beach.
