The Power of Community: The Johnson Family Volunteer Weekend

Just some of the volunteers who gave their time at the recent Community Volunteer Working Weekend

On September 14th and 15th, the Avoca Beach community came together for the Community Volunteer Working Weekend to support the Johnson Family. With help from local clubs including Avoca Beach Surf Lifesaving Club (ABSLSC), Avoca Beach Rugby, Avoca Kayak, Avoca FC, and Avoca Beach Bowling Club, the weekend was a testament to the power of community spirit.

Who are the Johnson family? Many will know the story, a young, vibrant family who tragically lost father and husband Scott, leaving behind mum Vanessa and five young children.

Volunteering is not just about offering help; it enriches the lives of those who give their time. Throughout the weekend, volunteers of all ages, ranging from children to retirees worked side by side, gaining new skills, making connections, and feeling the satisfaction of giving back. It was a true multi-generational effort, where everyone found a meaningful way to contribute.

The Avoca Beach Community Association has been praised by Community Working Days for playing a pivotal role in this initiative, organising morning tea and lunch on Saturday and ensuring volunteers were well taken care of. We were told, "Your attention to detail and dedication went above and beyond expectations, preparing certificates of appreciation and providing additional refreshments on Sunday."

The Surf Club Kiosk and Hi Tide provided morning tea and lunch. Contributions from Sarah Lea, Frescoes and drinks provided by ABCA kept a myriad of tradies and helpers refreshed.

Local Member of Parliament Adam Crouch (MP) visited the site, was deeply touched by the community effort and shared personal stories with volunteers.

Dr. Gordon Reid (MP) arrived separately and brought much-needed refreshments (read: beer!) to boost the spirits of those on-site. He expressed that the achievements of the weekend deserve to be celebrated in Parliament, recognising the incredible impact the community had on improving the Johnson family's household and making their lives a little easier.

Through the efforts of 169 individuals37 suppliers, and 122 people on-site, the weekend achieved 39 activities and generated over $110,000 in social equity, with more than 1,143 volunteer hours invested. It was an outstanding example of community action, and as Dr. Reid noted, an accomplishment that should be honoured and shared far beyond Avoca Beach.

There were many significant contributors to this worthy volunteer project, many who went well above and beyond expectations. The house and property were given an extensive makeover, inside and out. By request and agreement, a decision was made not to mention individuals. There were too many! It was not about recognition, just an outstanding community event for an excellent cause.
